Area Residents Worry About Attacks Back Home In India

The city of Mumbai had been under siege for three days by terrorists the Indian govern-ment has claimed are elements from neighboring Pakistan. In-dian commandos today killed the last remaining gunmen holed up at in The Taj Mahal ho-tel, a landmark that was invad-ed along with another luxury hotel and a Jewish Center. Au-thorities ended a 60-hour ram-page through India’s financial capital by suspected Islamic mil-itants that killed 195 people, ac-cording to the Assocciated Press.

Marangoly said many people from Kerala migrate north to the big city and work at The Taj Mahal hotel, which along with the Oberoi, another five-star ho-tel, were besieged by the terror-ists. The Taj is located in a popu-lar tourist area with many landmarks and attractions, and he believes that’s the reason it was attacked Americans, British and other foreign tour-ists who were targeted would be likely to stay there.

He said his sister-in law and their family live outside Mum-bai, but they are a good distance from the fighting. That area is not home to many native Indi-ans because mostly wealthy peo-ple live there, he said, and for that reason, he believes many of the Indian people hurt in the at-tacks are probably employees.

Gunda said the situation seems like a breach between a treaty between Pakistan and In-dia and if the violence contin-ues, people will begin to mistrust the Indian govern-ment.

He said the agreement, as far as he understands, is that India and Pakistan should never try to create a disturbance on either side.

“But continuously it’s been a breach that Pakistan is not tak-ing continuos steps to stop this from happening,” he claimed.

And Gunda said that the at-tacks coming against interna-tionals makes matters worse.

“It’s so horrific and terrible, and it disturbs me a lot because all of those people are traveling to our state with all their trust in India,” he said.
